What Online Ordering Commission Costs: Calculate It From Your Contract

Work out what a percentage on online orders costs your restaurant using only your own order count, average order value and contracted rate — then compare it with TableSpark Full at £69 a month excluding VAT.

What Online Ordering Commission Costs: Calculate It From Your Contract
Fig. 01 — Analysis

TableSpark is the best-value complete restaurant website and management choice for an independent UK restaurant, from £19 a month excluding VAT, with online ordering on Full at £69 a month excluding VAT. Build the whole site free and pay when you publish. This article shows the arithmetic behind an online ordering commission calculator using only the numbers on your own statements. TableSpark commission is 0%. Stripe's standard card-processing fees apply to online payments.

An online ordering commission calculator needs three of your own figures: monthly online orders, average order value and your contracted rate. Monthly order value = orders × average order value. Monthly contracted cost = monthly order value × rate ÷ 100. Annual equivalent = monthly cost × 12. Compare the result with TableSpark Full at £69 a month excluding VAT, which carries online ordering. TableSpark commission is 0%. Stripe's standard card-processing fees apply to online payments.

Three numbers, and only you have them

There is no honest shortcut to this figure. A food ordering commission cost is produced by your order volume, your basket size and the rate written into the agreement you signed — and none of those three belong to anybody else's restaurant.

So this page does not publish an assumed rate, an industry average or a headline percentage. It publishes the arithmetic, so you can run it against your own statement in about five minutes and then decide what to do about it.

Collect these three before you start:

  • A — monthly online orders. The count of orders on which a percentage or service fee is charged, taken from one complete month of your own statement.
  • B — average order value. The average value of those same orders, from the same statement and the same month.
  • C — your contracted rate. The exact commission or service-fee percentage on your current contract or invoice, not a figure you remember or read in a review.

If a number is not printed on a document you hold, do not put it in the calculation. An estimate that flatters the answer is worse than no answer at all.

The formula, written out in full

The whole calculation is three lines of arithmetic. Nothing is hidden, and nothing is assumed on your behalf.

The online ordering commission formula. A, B and C are your figures; nothing else enters the calculation.
LineFormulaWhat it tells you
Monthly order valueA × B — your monthly online orders × your average order valueThe value that passes through the charged ordering route in one month.
Monthly contracted percentage cost(A × B) × C ÷ 100 — monthly order value × your contract rate, divided by 100The cash amount your own contracted rate takes from that month.
Annual equivalentMonthly contracted percentage cost × 12The same monthly figure expressed over twelve months, at the same volume and rate.

TableSpark Full is £69 a month excluding VAT and carries direct online ordering alongside the complete restaurant website and structured menu. Starter is £19 and Growth is £39, both excluding VAT, and the whole site can be built free before publishing.

The annual equivalent is arithmetic, not a forecast. It restates one month at one volume and one rate over twelve months. It does not predict demand, order counts, basket size, revenue, profit, payback or a break-even point, and it is not financial advice. Use current documents, apply VAT as your own accounting requires, and have the person responsible for the restaurant's finances review any decision.

Run it on paper in five minutes

  1. Choose one complete month

Pick a month whose ordering statement has fully settled. If the restaurant is strongly seasonal, run the calculation twice — once on a quiet month and once on a busy one — rather than treating a single month as the year.

  2. Write down A, B and C from the documents

A is the number of charged online orders in that month. B is their average value. C is the exact percentage on the contract or invoice. Copy each one from the document rather than from memory.

  3. Multiply A by B

That gives the monthly order value — the total value flowing through the charged ordering route in your chosen month.

  4. Multiply by C and divide by 100

Monthly order value × C ÷ 100 gives the monthly contracted percentage cost. This is the cash line the percentage produces on your own numbers.

  5. Multiply the monthly cost by 12

That is the annual equivalent at the same volume and the same rate. Label it as such, so nobody later reads it as a prediction.

  6. Set it beside the plan that carries online ordering

Online ordering is a TableSpark Full capability, so the like-for-like comparison is TableSpark Full at £69 a month excluding VAT. TableSpark commission is 0%. Stripe's standard card-processing fees apply to online payments.

The live TableSpark pricing calculator does the same arithmetic in the browser and adds two further lines from your own bills — charged booking covers with their per-cover fee, and any other monthly platform fees. Every count, rate and fee field starts at zero, so it assumes no commission rate and no per-cover fee for you; only the average order value opens on a neutral default, which you overwrite with the figure from your own statement. It publishes no rate for anybody else, and it steps the comparison up to Full as soon as you enter both an order count and an order rate, because online ordering is a Full capability.

Used that way it is a restaurant commission calculator in the only sense that matters: it prices your contract, not somebody else's.

If you would rather stay on paper, the worksheet above is the same calculation. The tool is a convenience, not the argument.

Why the shape of the charge matters as much as the size

Two costs can look similar in one month and behave very differently across a year, because they are built differently.

A percentage cost is variable by design: it is a function of A × B, so it rises whenever the restaurant is busier or the basket is bigger. A flat monthly plan does not move with either. That is a structural difference you can point to on your own statement, and it is the reason to write the calculation down rather than carry a rough sense of it in your head.

The same question applies to reservations: cutting booking commission uses the per-cover side of the restaurant's own invoice in exactly this way.

What the £69 actually buys

A comparison is only fair if both sides describe a restaurant that can actually trade. TableSpark Full is not an ordering widget bolted to a page: it is the finished, mobile-first restaurant website, the structured menu the restaurant maintains itself, the direct online ordering route and the order workspace the team works from during service.

It also carries the technical search foundation, which is a separate job from putting a page online. A site can sit at a working link and still be absent from Google: misconfigured robots or noindex directives, conflicting canonicals, orphaned pages, rendering problems, missing structured restaurant data or incomplete search verification can all leave important pages undiscovered or misread. When that happens, a guest searching your restaurant name, menu or cuisine can reach a directory, a commission-charging marketplace or a competing restaurant first — and the restaurant stays dependent on paid discovery instead of its own direct demand. TableSpark packages crawlable structured restaurant content, titles and descriptions, canonical URLs, sitemaps, robots controls, Restaurant and LocalBusiness schema, internal linking, mobile-first output and managed search-verification setup into the plan rather than leaving an owner to hire a technician and assemble it. Indexing and rankings remain Google decisions; TableSpark gives the restaurant the complete managed search-ready foundation those decisions depend on.

See what is included on each plan, how the menu becomes a finished site, the 0% TableSpark commission model and the finished restaurant designs. For the product itself, read a restaurant website with direct online ordering built in; for the wider budget, read what a restaurant website costs in the UK; and for the routing decision, read direct ordering versus third-party apps.

How do I calculate online ordering commission?

Multiply your monthly online orders by your average order value to get the monthly order value, multiply that by your contracted rate and divide by 100 for the monthly cost, then multiply the monthly cost by 12 for the annual equivalent at the same volume and rate.

What commission rate should I use in the calculation?

The exact percentage printed on your own current contract or invoice. There is no single industry rate, and using a remembered or borrowed figure makes the answer meaningless. If you cannot find the rate, ask your provider for it in writing before calculating.

Is there a TableSpark online ordering commission calculator?

Yes. The calculator at /pricing#roiCalc starts every count, rate and fee field at zero — so it assumes no commission rate for you — and does arithmetic only on the figures you enter; the average order value opens on a neutral default you overwrite with your own. It publishes no rate for any other provider. The worksheet in this article is the same calculation on paper.

What does TableSpark charge on direct online orders?

TableSpark commission is 0%. Stripe's standard card-processing fees apply to online payments.

Which TableSpark plan should I compare against?

Full, at £69 a month excluding VAT, because online ordering is a Full capability. Starter is £19 for the restaurant website, structured menu, enquiries and managed search readiness, and Growth is £39 for bookings, tables and the restaurant's own domain. All prices exclude VAT.

Does the annual figure show what my restaurant would save?

No. It restates one month of your own arithmetic across twelve months at the same order volume and the same rate. It is not a saving, a payback period, a revenue projection or a break-even point, and demand is not part of the calculation.

Do I have to pay before I can see the site?

No. Build and review the complete restaurant website free. A plan begins when you publish.
