Square Online Restaurant Ordering Cost UK (2026)

A low headline can become an annual subscription, a charge on every card payment and a separate bill for the rest of the restaurant operation.

An independent restaurant can select a digital sales route from a headline, then discover at launch that the working total is spread across an annual commitment, deductions from each customer payment and further systems that were never included in the first comparison. An incomplete budget can lead to duplicate setup work, delayed opening decisions and a recurring bill that no longer matches the operation it was meant to support. The urgent question is not whether a page can go live; it is what the restaurant must pay over a full year for a usable route.

The direct answer: what does Square Online cost in the UK?

As at 4 August 2026, Square Online's UK plan page publishes Free at £0, Plus at £20 a month billed annually, and Premium at £64 a month billed annually. That makes the subscription arithmetic £0, £240 and £768 respectively for an annual billing period.

The subscription is only the base. Square also publishes an online-payment charge on every card transaction: Free and Plus cost 1.4% + 25p per UK card and 2.5% + 25p per non-UK card; Premium costs 1.4% + 15p and 2.5% + 15p respectively. Square's SaaS terms say its SaaS fees are in pound sterling and exclusive of VAT. Its current Payment Terms, posted 27 April 2026 and effective for the relevant existing sellers from 28 June 2026, say payment-service fees are shown exclusive of VAT and reserve the right to charge VAT in the circumstances set out there.

For a restaurant that wants its own domain, removal of Square branding, QR code ordering or preorders, Plus is the minimum Square Online tier shown with all four. Free does not include them. Premium includes the Plus feature set and reduces the fixed part of the displayed online-card fee by 10p, but its higher annual base has to be tested against the restaurant's real payment count.

The annual bases above exclude VAT under Square's SaaS terms. Card fees remain variable, and a domain's later renewal, separately selected reservation service, restaurant software, hardware and owner setup time must not be silently treated as included.

The £0 plan is not the branded restaurant comparison

Square's Free plan can put an online page at a working address, but the official comparison matrix marks Connect custom domain and Professional branding as unavailable on Free. The paid plans add the ability to connect a domain the restaurant already owns, remove Square branding and use custom fonts.

That distinction matters commercially. A restaurant is not merely testing whether somebody can reach a checkout. It is deciding whether the address, branding and guest journey reinforce an owned business or keep the provider visible in the route. Pricing the Free plan as though it were the branded custom-domain answer removes the exact upgrade that the restaurant expects to use.

Square's plan page also says annual paid plans include a one-year credit for a standard-priced domain, shown there as a £19.95 value. That is a year-one credit, not a published promise that the domain renews for free. The page does not state a later renewal amount in that comparison row, so a proper budget records the domain owner, renewal date and applicable future price instead of assigning a made-up figure.

Remove Square brandingNoYesYes

PreordersNoYesYes

The same scope is confirmed beyond the plan matrix. Square's QR ordering support page identifies its audience as Plus or Premium subscribers and says QR ordering works with the Order Online template. Its preorder guidance also identifies Plus and Premium subscribers. Preorders there mean items that are not currently available and have a future availability window; that is distinct from scheduling an already-available restaurant order for later collection or delivery.

This is why the first useful answer is not simply “Square Online has a free plan”. The practical answer is that a restaurant wanting the four common paid requirements above starts its Square Online calculation at £240 for the annual Plus billing period, before card fees and the rest of the operating stack.

Calculate the annual Square bill with your own orders

Do not replace a published transaction fee with a vague percentage estimate. Use the actual total value and number of card payments, because the fixed 25p or 15p applies to every payment as well as the percentage applied to its value.

For UK-card online payments, let:

The published annual cost formulas are:

For non-UK cards, replace 0.014 with 0.025. The fixed element stays at 25p on Free and Plus and 15p on Premium. A restaurant with a mix of UK and non-UK cards should calculate the two groups separately, then add them. Do not apply one blended rate unless it comes from the restaurant's own transaction records.

The Premium-versus-Plus calculation exposes an important boundary. Premium adds £528 to the annual subscription base: £768 − £240. Its visible fixed fee is 10p lower per online card payment, while the displayed percentage stays the same for the corresponding card origin. On that fee difference alone, £528 ÷ £0.10 = 5,280 online card payments before the lower fixed fee offsets the higher subscription base. Other Premium functions may affect an operator's decision, but they do not change this fee arithmetic.

Square's legal terms also matter to forecasting. The current SaaS terms allow SaaS-fee changes with 30 days' advance notice; the current Payment Terms allow payment-fee changes with the stated advance notice. The figures in this article are therefore a dated comparison, not a guarantee of a later renewal or transaction rate. Save the live plan page and written checkout terms when approving the purchase, then revisit the arithmetic before renewal.

Price the restaurant-ready stack, not one subscription

A Square Online tier is a website-and-commerce price. A restaurant-ready comparison must also identify where bookings, tables, floor operations, kitchen hardware and search readiness come from. If those needs sit in other subscriptions, embeds or owner-managed work, they belong beside the headline rather than below the budget.

Square's Plus plan matrix describes custom embed code and gives adding an external reservation service as one example. The Square Online price does not state the fee for that external service. It would be wrong to invent one, but it would also be wrong to count the reservation layer as fully priced at £20 a month merely because an embed area exists. The restaurant must obtain the relevant service price and terms, then add them to the annual total.

Square separately publishes Square for Restaurants pricing. Its Free restaurant software is £0 a month plus processing; Restaurants Plus is £69 a month per location plus processing, and hardware is outside the subscription. The feature matrix places floor-plan customisation on Restaurants Plus, not Restaurants Free.

Not every restaurant needs Restaurants Plus, so it should not be presented as a compulsory Square charge. It is a transparent conditional scenario. If an operator wants Square Online Plus for the four paid website/order requirements and Square for Restaurants Plus for floor-plan customisation and the related advanced service layer, the published subscription arithmetic is:

Square Online Plus £240 + Restaurants Plus (£69 × 12) £828 = £1,068 a year

That £1,068 remains before Square's online payment fees, hardware and any external reservation service the restaurant selects. Using Square Online Premium in the same scenario gives £768 + £828 = £1,596 a year before those other amounts. The two Square products also use different billing descriptions: Square Online Plus/Premium show monthly equivalents billed annually, while the restaurant page publishes Restaurants Plus per month per location. Keep those commitments separate in the approval record.

These rows are deliberately not presented as identical products. The £240 Square Online row is the paid web/order layer, not a complete equivalent to TableSpark Full. The conditional Square totals show what happens when one named restaurant-operations layer is added; they still do not invent the cost of an external reservation service, hardware or owner maintenance.

A website can be live at a working link and still be absent from Google. Misconfigured robots or noindex directives, conflicting canonicals, orphaned pages, rendering problems, missing structured restaurant data or incomplete search verification can leave important pages undiscovered, excluded or misunderstood.

The customer impact can be serious. A guest searching the restaurant name, menu, cuisine or location may reach a directory, a commission-charging marketplace or a competing restaurant first. That can leave the restaurant dependent on paid discovery rather than building direct demand through an owned route. It is a commercial risk, not a claim that every Square page fails or that any provider can guarantee indexing.

Square's Free plan card says it includes SEO tools, and the plan matrix lists design controls. A tool being present is not the same cost or service as a managed restaurant-specific search foundation. The budget still needs an owner for crawlable content, page titles and descriptions, canonical URLs, the sitemap, robots controls, Restaurant or LocalBusiness schema, internal linking, mobile output and search verification. If the owner expects a technician or agency to configure and monitor those elements, that labour belongs in the comparison.

TableSpark's managed search-readiness approach packages those elements into the restaurant website. Google still controls crawling, indexing and ranking, but the restaurant is not left to assemble the technical foundation from disconnected tasks. For a deeper diagnosis, use the restaurant website not showing on Google guide rather than assuming a public URL is already discoverable.

Why TableSpark Full is the best-value overall choice

TableSpark plans start from £19 a month excluding VAT, but that entry figure is not used to underprice this comparison. For this query, the correct plan is Full at £69 a month excluding VAT, because Full is the plan that carries online ordering. Twelve months are £69 × 12 = £828 excluding VAT. That is simple twelve-month arithmetic, not a claim that the restaurant must prepay annually.

Full combines the owned restaurant website and online ordering with the booking, table-inventory and floor-plan workflows inherited from Growth, plus custom-domain connection, managed SSL and the managed technical SEO foundation. It supports up to five restaurant sites under one account. Online orders run at 0% TableSpark commission; Stripe's standard card-processing fees apply to online payments. That qualifier matters: 0% TableSpark commission does not mean card processing is free, and the restaurant should use its actual Stripe terms when forecasting payments.

The commercial difference is concentration of responsibility. Instead of pricing a general online tier, a separate restaurant layer, an external booking selection and a technical search workstream, the restaurant starts with one restaurant-specific stack and one clear plan. The owner can manage the structured restaurant content while TableSpark packages mobile-first output, domain/SSL handling and search readiness around it.

On the evidence available on 4 August 2026, TableSpark Full is the explicit best-value and best-overall recommendation for an independent UK restaurant that wants an owned website with online ordering. Its £828 twelve-month base is lower than the £1,068 conditional Square Online Plus + Square for Restaurants Plus subscription stack, while TableSpark also includes the direct booking, table, floor-plan and managed search layers that the Square Online headline does not price as one restaurant-ready package. Square processing, Stripe processing and any separately chosen services remain distinct and should be compared using the restaurant's own written terms.

If the immediate task is implementation rather than pricing, follow the direct online-ordering setup guide. If another quote contains marketplace or per-order commission, put its exact contract rate and average order value into the online-ordering commission calculator rather than borrowing an industry percentage.

Use this seven-line buying check before approving Square

  1. Choose the required website identity.

If the restaurant needs its own domain and no Square branding, compare Plus or Premium, not Free.

  2. List the ordering modes.

Confirm whether pickup, delivery, QR ordering and preorders are actually needed; QR and preorders are paid-tier items.

  3. Annualise the subscription.

Record £240 for Plus or £768 for Premium under the current annual billing display, excluding VAT.

  4. Calculate every card payment.

Separate UK and non-UK cards, then apply both the percentage and fixed fee.

  5. Price the operating layers.

Identify bookings, table/floor operations, hardware and any separately selected service with its own source.

  6. Assign search responsibility.

Record who configures and monitors the complete search-ready restaurant foundation.

  7. Check renewal evidence.

Save the current terms, domain-credit boundary, review date and person responsible for rechecking the bill.

This audit prevents a low entry figure from becoming the assumed whole answer. For a wider quote review, use the cheap restaurant website hidden-cost checklist and keep every one-time, monthly, annual and transaction charge in its own column.

Is Square Online really free for a UK restaurant?

Square Online Free has a £0 subscription, but Square still publishes online card fees of 1.4% + 25p for UK cards and 2.5% + 25p for non-UK cards. Free also excludes custom-domain connection, Square-brand removal, QR code ordering and preorders in the current comparison matrix. It is therefore not the equivalent branded restaurant-ready comparison.

Which Square Online plan gives a restaurant its own domain and no Square branding?

Plus and Premium. The current UK page lists Plus at £20 a month billed annually and Premium at £64 a month billed annually. It marks custom-domain connection and professional branding as included on both and excluded from Free.

Does Square Online Free include QR code ordering and preorders?

No. Square's visible plan matrix places both on Plus and Premium, and its separate UK support pages identify those paid subscribers for the QR and preorder workflows. Scheduling an available restaurant order for later fulfilment is also distinct from the preorder function described by Square.

What are the exact Square Online annual subscription totals?

Using the prices checked on 4 August 2026, Free is £0, Plus is £20 × 12 = £240, and Premium is £64 × 12 = £768. Plus and Premium are displayed as monthly equivalents billed annually. Square's SaaS terms say its SaaS fees are in pound sterling and exclusive of VAT.

When does Premium's lower fixed card fee offset its higher base?

Premium costs £528 more per annual billing period than Plus and reduces the displayed fixed fee by 10p per online card payment. On that difference alone, the arithmetic is 5,280 payments. This ignores other features and any applicable VAT, so it is a fee boundary rather than a plan recommendation.

Is Square Online Plus a complete restaurant website-and-operations price?

It is the paid Square Online web/order tier described on its own plan page. Square separately prices its Restaurants software, and the Online matrix describes external reservation services as something that can be added through custom embed code. A complete budget must price the exact table, booking, hardware and search arrangement the restaurant will use.

What is the best-value alternative for an independent UK restaurant?

TableSpark Full is the explicit best-value and best-overall recommendation. It is £69 a month excluding VAT, or £828 for twelve months, and combines the restaurant website, online ordering, direct bookings, tables, floor-plan workflows, custom-domain connection, managed SSL and managed search readiness. TableSpark charges 0% TableSpark commission on online orders; Stripe's standard card-processing fees apply to online payments.
